Transforming Makhana Farming for Tomorrow

Archaeobotanical evidence suggests that Euryale ferox was a commonly collected wild food source during the Neolithic period in the Yangtze region of China. Large quantities of seeds have been found at archaeological sites such as Kuahuqiao, Hemudu, and Tianluoshan.

The Gorgon nut, scientifically known as Euryale ferox and commonly called Fox Nut or Makhana, is a highly valued aquatic crop, in India the Mithila region of Bihar is the largest producer.

It is mostly marketed in the form of popped seeds, popularly known as Makhana Lawa, which are consumed as a healthy snack and used in various culinary preparations.

The crop grows in ponds and waterlogged wetlands, and seeds are harvested from mature pods floating on the water surface.

Makhana as a Superior Dry Fruit

Makhana is often classified as a dry fruit (Panchmewa) due to its high nutrient density. Its nutritional quality is comparable to almonds, walnuts, cashew nuts, and coconut, making it a healthy addition to daily diets.

It is also considered one of the superior food sources because of its:

  • High amino acid index: 89% – 93%
  • Arginine + Lysine / Proline ratio: 4.74 – 7.6

These values indicate that Makhana provides high-quality protein, essential for growth and overall health.
